In honor of SZA’s Debut Full Length Album, CTRL, being released today worldwide, I wanted to bring back one of my favorite songs by SZA, Julia.
Julia is a sunny 80s infused track supplying plenty energy and a new sound from the often slowed down siren. She floats over the song as the video highlights her eclectic side perfectly. She manages to make a very simple video very stimulating.
SZA – Julia/(Tender)
If you haven’t heard any of her music before, SZA is an alternative R&B singer signed to Top Dawg Entertainment alongside the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, AbSoul and more. With the roster heavily tilted to the more testosterone fueled street poetry, SZA takes her airy vocals and whispers sweet nothing over takes of every sound. She’s in the vein of Jhene Aiko and H.E.R. SZA has put out a total of three official mixtapes (See.SZA.Run, S, and Z) with Z being her debut on TDE in 2014. She’s immensely talented and went from sonically alternative music with nonsensical lyrics on her early work to more sexually liberated and daring on her most recent release.
SZA – Teen Spirit
I won’t go too deeply into her here because I probably will review her new album next week after I’ve had time to sit with it. Otherwise. Enjoy a couple of her older tracks and stay tuned. SZA is definitely another female superstar on the rise.
Bonus : SZA – Babylon
